Permission priming for iOS push notifications
Push notifications to help users to be better informed in the poll organisation.
Problem statement
We have observed that a high amount of users on iOS do not allow notifications through the primer, only 30% of users installing the app for the first time allow push notifications. Android notifications are on by default. Push notification are here to notify users, both participants and organisers when new updates occurs (comments, participations, results of the poll). The former permission flow (primer and iOS system dialog) was displayed after the on-boarding when the app is installed and first opened.
“How might we make users to allow primer so it creates more engagement on the business side and improves the organisation of a poll for the users as they are better informed?”
What’s a permission primer?
A permission primer is a dialog to make users grant access to their phone data. Primer comes from “priming”. Priming is a tool or technique in psychology, an exposure to a stimulus influencing behaviour.
In some cases it is critical to grant mobile permissions as it can affect the functionality of the app. It is tricky to make users grant these permissions. They need to feel trust. It needs good timing and educating. Most apps will display permissions during the on-boarding when users first install the app, which is not always the best time to prime users depending on the permission.
Setting up priming permissions gives users subtle hints to guide them correctly to take the required actions.
How to fix it?
Ask in context before or after relevant actions
Adapt copy to the action
Ask many times not just once
Former primer

How we fixed the issue?
Copy improvements
Ask nicely
Remove other CTA option in the primer (ex: “Leave a Comment” CTA)
Button copy should be about the action they need to do
Copy should mention all the notifications the user will get
Title is adapted to the relevant action taken
Primer should be displayed more than once
Primer should be displayed at the right moment
Commenting
Voting
After inviting participants
Visiting the poll a second time
Iteration on multiple variations
